I have a print shop with images from Salvation Mountain.
I’ve always wanted to visit this place. I’m so intrigued by all the sights in and around the Salton Sea and everything totally off the beaten path. It’s eerie and obscure, and in that, I find art. I love the strange and unsual. I brought my road dog friend Jeremy with me. I ended up going back a second time for an engagement shoot there! I’ve been twice now. I’m more interested in scoping out the Salton Sea and all the abandoned buildings and homes there. It’s very away-from-it-all and basically a lawless place, so you have to be aware of your surroundings. The cops ain’t coming to save you.
Tips for anyone in LA who wants to visit:
1- Leave in the late morning/early afternoon. It’s about a 3-hour drive. It’s basically an all-day adventure.
2 – Not very many gas stations, so make sure you have a somewhat full tank as soon as you start to drive out into nothingness.
3 – To get there, you will drive through some of the Salton Sea area. If you have time, check that out.
4 – When the sun starts to set, head over to Pappy’s in Joshua Tree for dinner. Its about an hour away from this site, but Pappy’s is a must if you’re in the desert. If you know, you know.
